ABOUT THE ARTIST

Lia Rodrigues is a visual artist based in Faro, Portugal. Her artistic trajectory began through formal visual arts education during secondary school, later complemented by a degree in Advertising and Marketing at the Lisbon Polytechnic Institute. This dual background established an early dialogue between visual communication, image culture and artistic practice.
In 2018, while living in France, she began working with collage as a practical response to limited resources. What started as a necessity gradually developed into the central language of her artistic practice, allowing her to question authorship, image circulation and systems of representation through processes of cutting, displacement and recomposition.
Her work operates within the intersection of surrealism and absurdism, using fragmentation as both method and concept. Through analogue collage, she recontextualises found imagery, exposing tensions between mediated realities and lived experience. The work often reflects on collective conditions, power structures and human rights, approached through symbolic and archetypal visual constructions rather than direct narrative or illustration.
Alongside her studio practice, Lia develops workshops and mentorship formats focused on analogue collage as a tool for cultural mediation and critical engagement. She collaborates with cultural spaces, associations, schools and festivals across the Algarve and Lisbon, facilitating collective creative environments that encourage experimentation, visual literacy and collaborative thinking. Notably, she collaborated in Lisbon with Collage Working Club, an initiative founded by artist Nina Fraser dedicated to ongoing collage practice and community exchange.
In 2024, she was selected for Programa Emergente, supported by the Municipality of Faro and Teatro das Figuras. Since February 2026, she has been an artist in residence at Gama Rama Studios.
Cutting images is a way of questioning the systems that produced them.
